Stever-Zeitlin, Samantha

Samantha Stever-Zeitlin '27 was awarded the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) to continue learning Korean.

Why did you choose to apply for this award?

I was drawn to the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) because of its focus on diplomacy through the study of languages. I have lifelong passions for social justice and language study: CLS allows me to embrace both through intensive language instruction and cultural exchange.

Briefly describe the work you will be doing on your fellowship.

I will be studying Korean for 4+ hours a day in an intensive summer language institute at Pusan National University, spending time with a language exchange partner, and participating in cultural excursions with a cohort of 24 other US undergraduate and graduate students.

What are you most looking forward to during your time as a fellow?

I especially look forward to traveling around Busan with my language partner. I participated in a similar US Department of State program (NSLI-Y) in high school and continue to keep in touch with my language partner from that program. I'm very excited to make another close friend and exchange our perspectives and life experiences!

How have your experiences at Â鶹ÊÓƵprepared you to apply for this award?

At Oxy, I have learned from amazing professors in the Diplomacy and World Affairs, Music, and Linguistics departments. I believe that this multidisciplinary education has helped me become a better writer, more critical thinker, and an overall stronger candidate for CLS.

What advice would you give future applicants about the application process?

Reach out to students who have received the scholarship as soon as you can (feel free to reach out to me!), make sure your essays highlight how you align with the program's goals, and have evidence to back up your reasoning for applying.
